Limbo PS3 Review

XBLA has got a few titles over the years that I wish PSN would have got, one of them being Limbo. Finally though the PlayStation users have the ability to check out this indie title. But I did have to wonder, was it going to live up to all the hype?

You turn on a game an expect a menu screen. Not one here. You turn on a game an expect some kind of back story for what your doing. Not here. Limbo drops you straight into a strange and sometimes frightening world.

Starting the game by literally getting of the floor is a bit weird but you say here we go and head left for a secret and trophy and then right to start your first puzzle. But that's the odd thing about Limbo because I wouldn't consider Limbos challenges more puzzles over just really cool trial and error challenges.

Be prepared to die allot and by allot I mean at least a hundred times before you finish the game. It's not as frustrating as it sounds however because each time you die you will have learnt something. Like don't tread on that button or look out there's bear traps on the ground there.

Limbo really is that simple and it works. There's no tutorial or on screen instructions to tell you X is jump you just figure it out by pressing buttons. In such the control scheme even match's the trial and error sense of the entire game.

Limbo is a beautiful and scary game

The best thing about Limbo though is it's look and feel. The game is black and white and contains no music at all, yet manages to create one of the most eerie experiences I've had. It's strange that a game with no music cue upon death or slo-motion effect can have some of the most disturbing deaths in recent game history. I'd compare it to Dead Space yet here it's somehow less gruesome and just disturbing.

Play it with the sound up or with headphones on as well just to experience the great sound design. Plus it will help you if you get all the secrets and unlock the PS3 exclusive new level, which is darn hard and sound comes into play fully.

It's a freaky place

Even after saying all that I could easily suggest this game to a casual or none gamer. Because it's controls and understanding of the game are based upon you as the players ability to adapt and think and retry again and again.

It's a pitty it's at a $19:95 price tag however as it just seems way to high for the length of the game and the little to no replay value. But if you have deep pockets this is defiantly a title you must pick up.

Gameplay: 9.5
Graphics: 9.0
Sound: 9.0
Replay Value: 2.0

Overall: 9.0
